PRESS RELEASE: Sierra Energy to Present at the Jamaica Power Summit in Kingston, Jamaica

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Sierra Energy was invited by Electric Utility Consultants, Inc. to speak at the Jamaica Power Summit. April 19-20th in Kingston, Jamaica. This event links local representatives, government officials, and other energy experts to review and discuss the island’s current and future options for waste, energy, and fuel diversification.

Waste management is especially challenging for islands, posing serious complications for the sustainability of their growing communities. Unsightly landfills consume valuable and limited land. When they reach capacity, other larger landfills and waste hauling routes must be developed.

The high organic content of island waste releases more methane gases which are not only harmful to the environment, but can spontaneously combust creating large landfill fires similar to the recent blaze at the Riverton City Landfill. Additionally, tropical storms, hurricanes and other disaster debris dramatically increase waste disposal costs adding more strain to an already limited waste management budget.

Furthermore, Caribbean islands often pay 4-5 times more for power than the United States.

“Due to high energy prices and waste disposal issues unique to islands, the implementation of waste conversion would be tremendously beneficial,” says Mike Hart, CEO of Sierra Energy. “FastOx waste gasification would create jobs, increase renewable energy, produce locally-made fuels and protect island residents from the health hazards caused by landfills.”

With a transforming government administration and innovative professionals working in the industry, the power summit in Jamaica is well-timed as those in attendance look towards utilizing local renewable resources, effectively managing oil use, and implementing clean energy practices.
